Opening Comments by Mayor Peter J. Malouf - Regular Meeting of Tuesday, May 14, 2024

Here is Mayor Peter J. Malouf's opening comments at the May14, 2024, regular meeting of the Town Council. It has been adapted for the Web.

Note: The full recording of the meeting is available on the Town's Youtube Channel.

Good evening everyone. Thank you for joining us tonight, be it in person or virtually.

As has become the custom, I will give you a summary of the main files that have kept us busy this past month and that are of general interest. I will therefore of course start with the new sports and community center.

New Sports and Community Centre

On April 25, we held an information evening was held to present the project's progress and next steps. Some 104 people attended in person, and another 55 followed virtually. The presentation and recording of the evening are available on our website, which I invite you to consult.

The project is moving forward and the next steps to its implementation are being taken tonight. It is an exciting time for the Town, and I look forward to us all, especially our youth, to enjoying this new sports and community centre in the coming years.

Earth Day

Earth Day was held on April 22, and as part of the celebrations, the Town organized a competition to win 8 trees (Canadian Hemlock). Congratulations to the winners, including our councillor Caroline Decaluwe.

I also had the pleasure within Earth Day to meet with a group of students from Mount-Royal high school in the program Echo, who presented me with their priority list on actions the Town should take to better the environment. La discussion était intéressante et je salue leur engagement.

Medalist Congratulations

I would like to correct my announcement of congratulations to the young medal winners at the recent Jeux du Québec. I omitted to congratulate Corentin Cincont-Debout on his figure skating performance.

Live radar

As I mentioned last month, our Public Security, in conjunction with the SPVM, is carrying out speed verifications with a live radar around our schools.

Beaumont PPU

This project is moving forward. At the beginning of April, a meeting was held with the major landowners in the area, and, last week, a citizen participatory workshop was held. We had 50 participants and gathered many ideas and comments. Our consultant is compiling the data, and public feedback is scheduled for this summer.

As a follow up to our citizens consultative evening last week, I invite everyone to take part in our online survey on the subject so that we can gather as many ideas as possible. Our consultant will then collate the info and a public feedback meeting will be held this summer.

Royal Garden Park

Work on the park has been completed and residents will soon be able to enjoy it. We are just waiting for Hydro to come and connect the electricity so that the lamp standards are functional. This is planned for this week. Unfortunately for safety reasons we cannot remove the fencing until the Hydro connection is completed.

Hydro Québec

We thank you for your understanding regarding this coming Friday, when some of our services to residents will be interrupted due to a Hydro planned power interruption.

REM Petition

I'd like to remind all residents to take a moment and go to our Town's website where there's a link to sign the online petition that's been filed with the National Assembly regarding the noise and visual impact of the new REM line on our community. Our MNA Michelle Setlakwe will be submitting the petition on May 20th.

Tour de l’ile

Sunday, June 2 will see the Tour de l'ile. It will pass through the Plymouth/Lucerne area between 7:15 and 10:45. There will be no street closures, and residents of affected streets will receive a communication.

Road safety

With the approach of fine weather and summer, I'd like to remind everyone to be careful on the road, as children are playing outside, going to parks and many are beginners at cycling.

The Town is also doing its part to increase road safety: additional speed hump installations will start soon, some road reconfigurations near schools are being planned.

Additionally, in an effort to reduce through- traffic we will be implementing a pilot project on some streets.

Thank you for attending in person and online."
