News CSC: Official start of work

CSC: Official start of work

It's with great excitement that we announce the start of construction work for the future Community and Sports Centre.

Since July 7, a major worksite has been underway in the Town centre. The work to mobilize the site on the vacant lot between the town hall parking and the current REC will take until the end of 2027.

Schedule and potential impacts on nearby residents and summer camps

The schedule for work crews on the site will be Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 19:00, and possibly on Saturdays from 9:00 to 5:00. For local residents, the work will cause inconveniences such as dust, noise and trucking. We apologize for these inconveniences and thank them for your understanding.

Parents whose children are registered in the Town's various day camps and daycare services have received email instructions on the safety of campers and the running of activities as of July 7, and for the rest of the summer.

What does the work involve?

The sequence of works includes excavation, piling and construction of the foundations and structure of the facilities. Ultimately, the new CSC, which will be built on a design-build basis, will include full aquatic facilities, a double gymnasium, an agora, multi-purpose rooms, and spaces for young people, seniors and community organisations.

The work will also impact some of the trees located near the current REC. Already, a number of trees whose diameter made them viable candidates for relocation were carefully transplanted at the end of June to other green spaces in the town by BG Transplantation and ARBO companies. However, other trees whose diameter is too large for them to be transplanted will unfortunately have to be cut down. In return, and in order to minimise the impact on the urban forest, the Town is committed to planting around 25% more trees than those that will be removed, thus contributing to the long-term improvement of the urban canopy. Once the project is completed in 2027, the area will be carefully landscaped and these new trees will be planted to compensate for the loss and re-green the site.

Residents living close to the construction site will receive further communications in due course to keep them informed of the progress of the work.

This long-term project will require patience and understanding from all parties involved. We would also ask you to drive carefully in the vicinity of the worksite, always obeying the signs in place.
