Work Encroaching on the Street or Sidewalk? A Permit is Required!

Are you planning construction or renovation work on your property that will require use of public space—such as a street or sidewalk?

For example: parking a truck or container, storing materials, or blocking part of the road?

You must first obtain a temporary occupation or obstruction permit for public property.

This requirement is outlined in By-law No.1468 on Public Domain Occupancy Permits of the Town of Mount Royal. It ensures public safety, efficient traffic flow, and proper coordination of work across the town.

When is a permit required?

  • When any portion of public property (street, sidewalk, curb, etc.) is used, even temporarily.
  • To park vehicles related to construction work, including trucks, cranes, or trailers.
  • To store materials or place containers on the street.
  • For partial or full road closures.

Important to know:

  • A permit is mandatory, regardless of duration.
  • Overnight storage of materials or containers on public property is not allowed.
  • A traffic control plan must be included with your request if a full street closure is planned.
  • The Town does not provide signage—you are responsible for providing and installing it.
  • This permit does not replace other permits related to construction. Please consult the Urban Planning Division for more information on required certificates and authorizations.
