Application to Cut Down a Tree

A tree-cutting permit is required when the trunk of the tree to be cut down is ten centimetres (10 cm) or more in diameter at a height of one point three metres (1.30 m) above ground level (diameter at breast height [DBH]) (By-law No. 1441, art. 279).

Please submit this form along with all relevant documents and photographs by email to abattagearbre@ville.mont-royal.qc.ca or delivering them to Public Works at 180 Clyde Road, H3P 2N9, tel. 514-734-2999, fax 514-734-3094. Following receipt of your duly completed application, the inspector has thirty (30) working days to carry out the inspection.

- Certificate of localization, if the tree is located on your property line and your neighbor's property line or if your request is related to a construction project (pool, extension, demolition, landscaping, etc.).


- For tree removal requests related to a construction project as mentioned above, please provide a plan of your project.


- Written consent from your neighbor, if the tree is located on your property line and that of your neighbor.

The inspector may request a forest engineer’s report at any time. Please be aware that the inspector always inspects the property concerned. An inspection report will be left in your mailbox or emailed to you after the inspector’s visit.

If the tree is located on the border between your property and a neighbour’s property, you must provide the written consent of your neighbour as well as your certificate of location.

Applications to cut down a tree will not be approved if the reason for the application is damage caused by normal issues related to the presence of trees, including the dropping of twigs, leaves, flowers or fruits, the presence of above-ground roots, the presence of insects or animals, shade, unpleasant odours, the secretion of sap or honeydew or the release of pollen (By-law No. 1441, art. 278).

By signing this application, the applicant undertakes to: Submit a duly completed application to Public Works: the signed application form, photos of the trees concerned, construction plans approved by Urban Planning and Development, consent of your neighbour (if applicable), etc. Upon receiving approval, the applicant undertakes to: Obtain and pay for the permit at Urban Planning and Development, located at 20 Roosevelt Avenue, H3R 1Z4, tel. 514-734-3042. The fee for the permit is $200 per tree or $500 per tree located within a project site. Dispose of the wood and branches (Town of Mount Royal does not offer this service). Replace the cut-down tree with a new tree with a minimum diameter of 5 centimetres measured at 1.3 metres above ground in the six months following removal of the existing tree (By-law No. 1441, sec. 279).
