Opening Comments by Mayor Peter J. Malouf - Regular Meeting of Thursday, October 2, 2025

Here is Mayor Peter J. Malouf's opening comments at the October 2, 2025 regular meeting of the Town Council. It has been adapted for the Web.

Note: The full recording of the meeting will be available on the Town's Youtube Channel.

“Good evening everyone,

Tonight, as we hold this final council meeting, I would first like to sincerely thank my colleagues.

Serving on council is never easy, we may not always agree, but it takes considerable time, dedication, and understanding of one’s role to represent all residents fairly and objectively.

For that, I thank you.

First in Class

Once again this year, we have something to be proud of. For the second consecutive year, The Globe and Mail has named the Town of Mount Royal the most liveable municipality in Quebec, and #11 in all of Canada out of 8,000 municipalities.

This distinction reflects not only sound management, but also the vitality and quality of life that residents themselves bring to our community.

Financial Situation

We are also in an enviable financial position.

Our recently announced financial results confirm an annual surplus of $9.4 million and an accumulated surplus of $37.8 million. This is a clear demonstration of sound management, prudence, and a city prepared for the future.

Current Projets

On a more personal note, I want to say how much I love our town. It is my home, my passion and my pride. Nothing makes me happier than seeing the long-awaited vision for Danyluk Park finally come to fruition with the construction of the Community and Sports Centre – a project delivered on time and on budget that will serve many generations of citizens.

Alongside this, the new fire station and municipal buildings, which will house our engineering, urban planning, and public security teams, have also just begun construction. These projects are part of a long-term vision finally being realized.

Thanks

I must also thank our excellent administrative team, led by our highly regarded Town Manager, Mrs. Ava Couch. Your professionalism and responsiveness to residents’ needs are a cornerstone of our success and represent what TMR is all about.

I would also like to highlight the exceptional collaboration and teamwork of all municipal departments. I have had the privilege of working closely with eight outstanding department heads, including five talented and committed women who contribute greatly to the strength and vitality of our city. Every one of you has demonstrated competence, professionalism, and dedication.

To our residents, I extend heartfelt thanks. Many of you have contributed in your own ways, bringing forward thoughtful, solution-oriented ideas. Others have taken the time to write notes of appreciation for the services we all benefit from—services we sometimes take for granted. Your support and engagement have been a constant source of encouragement.

Municipal Election

And finally, I wish the best of luck to the councillors who will be running in the upcoming municipal elections. Serving the public is never easy, but it is always an important and rewarding mission.

Thank you all.”
