Opening Comments by Mayor Peter J. Malouf - Regular Meeting of Tuesday, June 13, 2023

Here is Mayor Peter J. Malouf's opening comments at the June 13, 2023, regular meeting of the Town Council. It has been adapted for the Web.

Note: The full recording of the meeting is available on the Town' s Youtube channel.

‘’ Good evening Everyone,

Thank you for joining us this evening, in person or from the comfort of your home.

I would like to raise several points with you this evening:

Dalle-Parc (Station Square)

I am happy to announce that at a special Council meeting held on May 25, Members awarded the contract for the landscaping project of the dalle-parc for the Station Square.

Following a public tender call, the contract was awarded to Les Entreprises de construction Ventec Inc. in the amount of $1.77 million. A sum of $1.95 million has been set aside for this purpose.

Lieutenant Governor’s Medal

More good news! I'm delighted to announce that Mrs. Jocelyne Koss has received the Lieutenant-Governor's Award for her community work here at TMR.

This medal is awarded in recognition of the excellence of seniors' volunteer work and their ability to surpass themselves.

Congratulations Mrs. Koss, you are undoubtedly a role model for all seniors who wish to give back to their peers and the community.

Lemonade Kiosk for Hôpital Sainte-Justine

The lemonade stand held on June 7 was a great success, with an estimated 2,000 people in attendance.

The event, which began as a small lemonade stand set up in a front yard, has grown over time to become an annual community event. This year, it raised $104,500 for the Pediatric Heart Centre at Sainte-Justine Hospital.

Congratulations to all the organizers and volunteers.

Safety on the Road

Please note that the speed bumps located at stop signs on public roads do not comply with MTQ standards.  For this reason, they will not be reinstalled this year. However, we are currently in the process of adding speed bumps on a permanent basis to help reduce speeding on our streets.

We are currently running a pilot project to install speed trays. Located at targeted intersections, they will help reduce road speeds in 4 different strategic TMR locations.

Security Around School

In 2022, public security completed 928 hours of surveillance in school zones. This corresponds to an allocation of at least 5 person-hours per school day for this work.

I'd like to mention that police interventions show that the majority of tickets are given to residents. So, it is everyone's responsibility to pay attention, respect speed limits and traffic signs to keep our streets safe.

Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be held on June 15. You're invited to join us at Connaught Park for activities between 13:00 and 15:00.

Community and Sports Centre

Following last month's municipal council decision to go ahead with the sports and community center, our website has been updated with the latest information in the form of an FAQ.

We hope the information provided will answer any questions you may have. As mentioned above, we will keep you regularly informed of the progress of this major project, which will bring the community together.

We are currently preparing the tender documents for the professionals who will accompany us in the design-build process. The tender should be launched shortly.

Bill 96

I have heard from a few residents about their surprise that TMR did not join the lawsuit to contest Bill 96. The Council discussed the matter in January and jointly concluded that the points which are being contested are points to which the Town already complies. There is no real impact for us. As much as we disagree with many of the principles of this Bill, we feel that our energies and money are not being used optimally in joining this lawsuit.

We are however this evening adopting a resolution concerning our opposition to the adoption of Bill C-13 and the Federal Government’s position.

I wish to remind everyone, that we are a bilingual municipality and intend to keep our status as such. However, we have not felt that joining the lawsuit (Bill 96) was in the best interest of the community.

I believe to have covered all recent happenings in the Town. I have shared my available info with you all on various projects.

I wish you all a great summer and look forward to seeing you at Summerfest on June 28.

Enjoy your Council meeting!”
